Not if you'll be affected by strong waves and any strong currents. It's better to stay close to shore and wear a life preserver. Build up your swimming skills first and then you can try swimming in the ocean.

If u have a lifeguard watching. but watch out for rip currents. IF u get caught in one go parallel to the beach. I hear they are usually no more than 100 feet wide.

only in shallow no wake areas with a life guard, don't go in where you don't know what you will encounter
